It’s one of the best and biggest personal watercraft events in the Southeast, and it’s our fourth time attending so of course we’d make our trip to the 2018 Mudbug an episode of “Long Haul!” We brought with us two of the most exciting personal watercraft in the marketplace today, the 2018 Yamaha GP1800 WaveRunner and the new 2018 Sea-Doo RXT-X 300, because of course we would! When we weren’t conducting acceleration tests between the two machines, we were taking turns touring the various waterways and bayous surrounding the Morgan City, LA area. The Watercraft Journal even partnered up with PWCTrailfinder.com’s own Billy Crews on what he calls his favorite ride, the Blind River Loop. The Watercraft Journal test rides RIVA Racing’s maniacally-fast Stage III kit-equipped 2018 Sea-Doo RXT-X 300. Starting with a stock 2018 Sea-Doo RXT-X 300, RIVA Racing throws on its proven Stage III kit to aptly unlock all of the power potential in the venerable ACE 300 engine and unlock what can be done with the new ST3 platform. We were wowed with this package as it gives the enthusiast all of the power and neck-snapping acceleration that you’d expect for the hardcore racer. The thrust comes on so dang hard we literally launched the ski completely out of the water – that is until we engaged the Sea-Doo’s factory Launch Control – and then BAM! We were off and running all the way to 83mph. And so can you.

The Watercraft Journal gives you a closer look at the all-new 2018 Sea-Doo RXT 230. It’s lesser price shaves off quite a bit from its more expensive sibling, the RXT-X 300, the RXT 230 still has a lot to offer. Riding on an all CM-Tech hull and a wholly innovative deck that employs BRP’s easy access centralized storage compartment, tilt steering, and all-new LinQ accessory platform, the RXT allows riders to reach into their storage without leaving their seat, and even refill their gas tank while at the dock! And with a removable access plate revealing a wide-open engine compartment, service and tuners can reach the whole powertrain with ease. Performance-wise, the RXT 230 hit’s a top speed of 68+mph in a sprint, and can handle pretty much any water conditions without breaking a sweat.

Whoowee! The Watercraft Journal sums up nearly a whole year with a 2017 Sea-Doo GTR-X 230 in just over 9 minutes! Many of you will also recognize this machine as being the trusty steed on several previous episodes of Long Haul throughout last year – and for good reason! Not only did we clock consistent 68-miles per hour top speeds, but averaged fuel economy that challenged many naturally-aspirated machines. Sure, we have a few critiques but overall, this GTI-based, RXP-X topped runabout was a big winner in our books. 2018 Yamaha VXR WaveRunner – Long Haul Episode 20

Could the VXR be Yamaha’s ultimate naturally-aspirated WaveRunner? We certainly want to say so! With its striking paint and trim scheme, stellar handling, gobs of low-end torque and included electric trim and RiDE dual-throttle brake and reverse system, it’s got everything it needs and nothing else that it doesn’t. Sharing the same mold as the GP1800 and base-model VX Sport, the VXR is cast from the middleweight NanoXcel material (not the lighter NanoXcel2), helping drop the weight slightly below its supercharged sibling. With 180-horsepower on tap, the VXR delivers plenty of oomph right out of the gate, and yet, can play all day long thanks to its 18.5-gallon fuel cell and class-leading fuel economy. Sure, we’re saying this is a heck of a hot rod, but it also can do double duty as a fun-for-the-whole-family toy.

It’s even been the recipient of The Watercraft Journal’s “Watercraft of The Year,” the winner of several offshore super course and endurance races, and continues to be the favorite of performance-minded runabout riders since its redesign in 2012. It’s the most well-equipped, luxurious personal watercraft that Sea-Doo has built, and in this episode of “Long Haul” we put this supercharged machine through its paces. Of the GTX models, there’s only two tiers of the Limited series, 230 and 300. We don’t get into the nitty gritty performance differences between the two, because frankly, the person who is going to buy one likely isn’t going racing.

So what does The Watercraft Journal think about Sea-Doo’s all-new, completely redesigned 2018 GTX Limited 230 and 300? The revolutionary ST3 platform borrows heavily from both the outgoing RXT-X as well as the current RXP-X 300 to make it the best rough water-handling Sea-Doo we’ve ever ridden. But it’s not just in the chop where it shines, either.

The opulently-appointed Limited package is the only Sea-Doo to include its BRP Premium Audio System and USB port for phone chargers as standard equipment! (It’s optional on all other ST3-based machines.) Add to that Sea-Doo all-new centralized storage, a flip-up top deck, massive engine access panel and modular Linq system and you’ve got one heck of a machine on your hands.

Not content to simply build “their version of a Spark,” Yamaha WaveRunners designed a completely unique 3-seater runabout to compete in the ever-growing Rec Lite segment. The new EX series is light, playful and smart, and yet retains a lot of Yamaha’s standards in reliability and longevity. The Watercraft Journal reviews the top-of-the-line EX, the EX Deluxe, and shows that just because it’s budget-minded doesn’t mean it isn’t fun.

Three States Around on The MTPWC Ironman Ride – Long Haul Ep. 12

The Watercraft Journal racks up over 450 miles as it joins the Middle Tennessee Personal Watercraft Club on its annual Ironman ride. Last year they racked up over 200 miles in one day; but this time they spread it over 3 days and well over double the previous mileage. Aboard our trusty 2017 Sea-Doo GTR-X 230, were we cruised from the top of Tennessee, through Mississippi and into Alabama. It’s truly some Southern Comfort that you need to see!
